In a significant step towards ensuring democratic and participatory governance, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif and Registrar Prof. Mehtab Alam Rizvi held a comprehensive meeting with the office bearers of the Subject Associations—namely, Vice Presidents, General Secretaries, and Joint Secretaries—from all departments and centers of the university. Subject Associations, a vital part of every department and center, are formed annually. The office bearers are elected according to JMI’s established procedures. These Subject Associations play a crucial role in establishing a highly democratic system. Through elections held annually in their respective departments and centers, these associations ensure that every student enrolled in various courses is represented.

The session, which lasted over six hours, aimed to provide students with a platform to openly express their concerns, suggest creative solutions, share useful ideas, and collectively develop a roadmap for the university’s development. The meeting was moderated by Professor Nilofar Afzal, Dean of Student Welfare. She welcomed all the officials and invited them to share their views. She also encouraged students to view this as an opportunity to engage directly with the university’s leadership.

Jamia Registrar Prof. Rizvi highlighted the importance of the academic and literary activities organized during the “Talimi Mela.” He also underscored the importance of the Subject Association as an elected body that plays a vital role in representing student interests and issues.

Jamia Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif personally interacted with all the representatives from various departments and centres.

Student leaders from all departments, centers, and faculties participated in the meeting, and all representatives were given ample time to express their views. Students offered constructive and insightful suggestions for enhancing industry-academia engagement, strengthening placement initiatives, and institutionalizing student exchange programs.

The university administration listened to all complaints, suggestions, and requests with utmost attention and empathy, and noted all the issues raised. Responding to these concerns, Vice Chancellor Prof. Mazhar Asif stated that solutions to the issues raised can be categorized as short-term and long-term, and action will be taken accordingly. Prof. Asif explained that short-term issues will be resolved immediately, while those requiring long-term planning will be addressed when funds become available. He also informed the gathering that nodal officers have been appointed for key aspects such as the SWAYAM course, the Indian Knowledge System, the implementation of NEP 2020, and internships, and they are working diligently to resolve all these issues. Prof. Asif further stated that the smooth functioning of Jamia is the collective responsibility of both the administration and the students, and that the contribution of both is essential for its overall development. He encouraged students to contribute meaningfully to this initiative.

The meeting was attended by deans of various faculties, chairpersons of departments, directors of centers, the provost of hostels, and other important university officials, who interacted directly with students and answered their questions. Among those present were Professor Tanuja, Dean of Academic Affairs, Professor Ehteshamul Haque (Acting Controller of Examinations), and University Librarian Dr. Vikas Sitaramji Nagrale.

In conclusion, Jamia Registrar Prof. Md. Mahtab Alam Rizvi assured the participants that efforts would be made to hold such meetings more frequently in the future to keep the dialogue between the administration and students strong, effective and deliberative.
